Community Involvement
Service learning opportunities
are an integral part of our curriculum. Our small school likes making
connections with the greater community whether it be sharing events
such as participation with Darrow
School, a private preparatory school down the road, writing
letters to penpals in India, or raising money or supplies for such
diverse charities as a Tsunami affected school rebuilding effort
in Sri Lanka, the Hope Project, Muscular Dystrophy Association,
Unicef, Oxfam International, and the Heifer Project. Darrow students
come once a week as part of their "Hands to Work" program
to assist in the classrooms, and we share in both their Winter Revels
and Maplefest. Last year we participated in a grassroots Pinwheels
for Peace ceremony to honor the International Day of Peace, donated
the proceeds of an "Empty
Bowls" dinner to Charlie's Pantry in New Lebanon and Oxfam,
and we plan to attend a local Christmas tree lighting ceremony and
community sing.
"Mountain Road School comes closer
to making ideals a reality than any other organization I have
ever encountered."
